OK Tom, we are in full agreement!

Yes, indddeed!  That's an exercise everyone should be required
to go through to pass "Stereo Photography 1.0".  

All that is needed is high school geometry (at least Greek or 
European high school... not sure about American!!!! Ha, ha, ha!)  

Deriving formulas from first principles is not difficult and builds 
confidence.  On-film deviation is one.  Depth of field and hyperfocal
distance is another.  Once you derive the formulas and see what kind
of assumptions are built into them you stop being dependent upon them.

You can then forget all about math and concentrate on photography.  
That's what I've done!  I don't think I have ever used a ruler for
my macro stereos!  No 1/30 rules, nothing!  Just a blend of intuition,
experience and common sense.  Maybe a bit of trial and error too.  
I had enough science in school and real life.  This is a hobby, not 
a job!  It is fun!!!
