I think you mean "Use this flash in *automatic* mode", don't you? You
choose the correct "color" auto setting for the aperture you want at
that film speed, then the flash will adjust the light output rather than
you having to adjust the aperture every time the distance changes within
that 5-15 feet range, to keep exposure OK.
If you use a smaller less powerful flash (with a guide # of closer to 60
than the Vivitar 283's GN of 120), then the auto choices may only be f 4
or f 5.6 at best, so you may need to use manual to get down to a better
depth of field aperture like f 8 or f 11. It is annoying to have to use
the flashes on manual, but it can be done. Easiest if you keep you
subjects at a certain distance rather than having to change the camera
settings all the time. -Linda
