P3D Stereocard Question

I was looking through some old stereocards and I noticed that the
separation between mounted views varies from publisher to publisher. So
far, I have found 3 different space widths. Is there a standard or is it a
'whatever works' philosophy? Please, lets not get into a math battle over
what is the proper separation. Is there some general rule of thumb?
