I would like to make a quick comment here.  First, the 1/50 setting is
an excellent recommendation.  Most modern cameras synch the flash at
1/60.

Second, shutter speed DOES make a difference when using a flash if the
camera uses some type of shutter blade mechanism to expose the film.  If
the camera uses an iris type of shutter, than the speed doesn't matter. 
Attempting to use a camera at a shutter speed higher than the synch
speed will cause a bar of light to appear diagonally across your photo.

Of course, from what I've heard, most '50s vintage cameras didn't go
much faster than 1/100 anyway and, again as George stated above, 1/50 is
an excellent choice for shutter speed.
