P3D Richmond NSA Convention - 1 more time.

Shab Levy made a posting on the people who joined the SSA during the
Richmond Convention. I want to welcome all of them and tell them that if
they have 1/3 as much pleasure out of their SSA membership as I have had
for the past 20 years they will realize what a bargain the $10 annual
membership is. I especially want to welcome Nancy Castro and Dan
Shelley, since they are both stereo card makers. I started trying to
recruit Nancy Castro to join the SSA in 1992, at the Fort Wayne NSA
Convention, after she showed me some of her wonderful stereo cards.
Persistence pays off, I guess.

A "mini highlight" of the Richmond Convention was the acquisition by SSA
General Secretary Bill Patterson of several stereo cards, complete with
their folio envelopes and comments, from Mr & Mrs Walter Cotton, which
were made in 1920 and 1921. The folio envelopes were in poor shape, but
the cards held up very well, including the mounting medium (Wheat paste
maybe Bruce?) The comments on the envelopes were similar to those you
read today-Should have been closer, Why did you pick this subject and
on and on. Rose Cotton was the first woman to join the Stereoscopic
Society American Branch, after it split from the parent organization in
1919. Her SSA membership number was 44, Walter's was 45. To show you
how far/little we have progressed, I joined in March 1978 and received
SSA membership 715, Susan Wageman joined this year and she has SSA
membership 1015.
These old cards will be placed in the SSA Archives, which Bill Patterson
maintains.

The annual meeting of the SSA was on Sunday morning, as usual. This
conflicts with the trade fair and some of our members, who are dealers,
go to the trade fair instead of the SSA meeting. Consideration is being
given to moving the SSA meeting to another day/time so that perhaps more
members can attend the meeting.
