With this talk of "double depth" mounting to provide a window in 
front of the screen, this technique can also be used to reduce 
ghosting on slides with high contrast.  

Let's say you have a slide of a waterfall against black rock.  
With the window at the screen, the two images of the waterfall 
appear side by side on the screen.  Ghosting appears due to 
incomplete extinction by the polarizers.

Now remove the 1 mm from the middle of the mask.  The waterfall, 
formerly near infinity, is at the surface of the screen.  The 
window is now in the laps of the audience, but you no longer 
have ghosting.
