Hi Jay. It is possible that your PC cord is stressed and making
intermittent continuity connections simply by moving the cord into
different positions. Try holding the flash in your hand and moving it
around, then depress the shutter. This is a very common problem with
audio patch cords as they tend to weaken by simply resting in the same
position for long periods of time. With audio cords however you can hear
the cracklng sound, a flash either fires or does not fire. Also, could
it be possible that the jack needs to ground to the metal camera body as
opposed to being mounted in plastic?
I'm certainly not a camera expert but I have had similar experiences
with various electronic equipment, enough to drive me crazy! Good luck.
