Hello all,
I have been lurking for several months.
Recently, I have started doing 3-d video after learning the fundamentals of the 3-d art from others with more experience using conventional photography and digital cameras. After extensive rolls and digital downloads of side step, hyper-shot landscapes, synthetic 3-d pictures of the moon from satellite data, and having about a hundred thousand enthusiatic discussions with the few people I know who do 3-d, I have made the equipment plunge.
Just as I was deciding how to break my budget, Fry's Electronics in Fremont, CA decided to put 8-mm video cameras on sale two weeks ago. New Canon ES-870s for $300. Color viewfinders, 20x optical zoom, f/1.6 optics and lots of neat toys. I bought a pair. So, my investment (and practice of the obscure 3-d art) became a fait accompli. I also bought IOmega's Buz system.
I have been into 3-d as a mathematical translation of a 3-d space into a 2-d projection space since college (quite a few years ago). My photography goes back to the early '70s and I have done B&W darkroom work. My decision to go down the video path reflects my lack of investment in conventional technology and the availability of really good video software and hardware for cheap.
I found others exploration of Pulfrich very tantalizing, but it is not for me. So I created my rig which has two identical Canon's on a T-bar fabricated from a short Boy Scout axe handle (combination monopod and pistol grip) and 1/8 mending bar covered with 1/8" neoprene diaphragm material. I attach the cameras using a 1/4-20 x 3/4" set screw (threading it into the bottom of each video camera and using it as a stud) plus a wing nut.
I have already done some very nice still captures using my IOmega Buz system. And I now have created some frame-synchronized MPEG files that can (in theory) be played back as parallel channels at full bandwidth. I have VRex glasses and, I don't like them much. But they're better than some other systems. I am interested in free view methods, or worst non-shuttered glasses. But, in the mean time I will use shuttered glasses if I have to. I have some designs sketched on paper napkins for freeview systems but have not built them yet. They involve cheap TVs. I find my victims (audience) don't like the flicker and headache associated with glasses, so I want full bandwith 60 frames per second/interlaced/per channel. Don't set my goals too high do I? Wink.
So there it is. My 3-d soul bared!! I am interested in cultivating a sub-group of people who wish to discuss this aspect of the art on or off line. My feeling is that by judging the general content of this group during my extended lurk, this is a minority area of interest. Please let me be wrong!!! <ggg>
Are there other brave souls out there pioneering 2 channel video 3-d? I am interested in trading ideas, equipment styles, view/capture designs, software suggestions, recommendations, pictures, insights, et cetera. Let me know either publicly, in this group or by private e-mail. Let's use the tag line "2 Ch Stereo Video" to distinguish ourselves from other practitioners of the 3-d arts such as those who practice Pulfrich or photographic film based technologies. Wait, some of them may want to tag along, huh?
Okay share your ideas. Please. Anyone.

The farther back you are from the subjects the faster you can go. At about 4 mph the resulting 3-D perspective is approximately ortho (using 2.5 inches interoccular separation). Speeds faster than 4 mph result in hyper-stereo perspective and speeds less than 4 mph result in macro stereo perspective. In my video the speed I used translates into an apparent interoccular separation of .3 inches, about that of a large butterfly or a bumblebee, making for some giant rose blossoms.

> 5. As in regular stereo photography focus and depth of field are critical. With the video camera you need to use a shutter speed fast enough to freeze each video frame in focus. At very slow movement speeds normal shutter speeds whould be just fine. At higher movement speeds you will need to bump up the shutter speed accordingly. Also, the amount of light that you have available has a lot to do with how much latitude you will have in adjusting shutter speeds. Most of my video was shot in bright sunlight.

> 6. As in regular stereo photography you need to have subject matter that has multiple levels of depth. I always try to have at least three levels--close, medium, and far.
