You do have to measure slave-subject distances -- unless the slave flash 
works like the popular Vivitar 283 / 285.   As David mentioned, these 
flashes have what amounts to an 'auto-exposure' system.  No need to 
measure anything. Just set up the slaved flash and blast away.  Point and 
shoot easy.
