As others have pointed out, 3.5 Realists vignette at the smaller apertures.
Generally, one should not stop down below f11.
This is not as big a problem as it might seem at first. To begin, the
depth of field at f8 covers the projectable parallax range, so you won't
have any problem keeping in acceptable focus. And you generally won't stop
down to f16 for flash.
The problem is when you want to use an ASA faster than 100 outdoors, as the
Realist has a slow shutter by modern standards. You might consider getting
a set of neutral density filters, if you like the versatility of fast
films.
As Dr T. pointed out, the Realist was designed with Kodachrome 10 in mind.
Us 21st century guys gotta adapt. Questions to camera geniuses: (1) is it
possible to modify the Realist lenses to end the vignetting? Charlie Piper
modified KinDar/Hyponars to solve a similar problem. (2) is it practical to
re-engineer the Realist shutter for faster speeds?
