"Is VREX Developer Studio the only software for converting jpg stereo
pairs into jps format? I would like to do this but with the $79 price
tag I wanted to make sure it is the only way. Not that I'm cheap or
anything ;-)

Just looking for a good value.

The JPS format is a powerful way to convey stereo images, especially on
monitors. VRex Developer Studio is a good value for $79 since you get
$50 wireless glasses thrown in.

The software allows you to open bmps, jpgs, most of what you might have
as source images and paste them into DDS windows. You get to crop the
images in a difficult and tedious way, and finally view them.
If you have a rotation or dust problem you can rescan, or use some other
software to correct, or cleanup the image, sometimes paste, or save and
drop and drag back into Developer, possibly resize and recrop. Then view
again.
The software allows some vertical and horizontal adjustment of the image
prior to saving. This might be saved as offsets before the stereo image
tag is applied. DepthCharge later recognizes this JPS designation and
data. You can save in other formats other than JPS. You can save as JPG
or bmps. DDS does many important things very well for the value. A more
professional version would have to cost more.

You can view JPEG (JPG)images using DepthCharge. So, any software that
writes JPEG can be read with DC. The stereo pair has the right image on
the left and left on the right...NOT like a stereo card. This allows
crosseyed viewing of any size image on your monitor. Parallel viewing
does not make good use of your display's pixels. Crosseye is easy and
good if you know how - I crosseye preview my Realist rolls before
mounting.

Anyway, you can try making a few RL pairs and save as JPGs and use them
with the free DepthCharge software just to try it. You will discover
what a pain this is to do without DDS. If you don't have glasses VRex
ones work well (after you thow aside the plastic protector and glue on
the nose piece), the image quality is great at 117 Htz on a seventeen
inch monitor.

Any JPS or JPG right/left pair may be played back using DepthCharge.
So, if you want to view your images as anaglyphs you can. Or you could
get Depth and view my images with your red/blue, or green/red, SSDI, or
whatever glasses. See results before you start. I believe that this
format is today's version of the stereo card. There is no better way
for mass distribution of stereo images so cost effectively. Then too, I
send stereo pairs of my family to my parents to view on their computer.

I don't know, maybe I'm just living in the future with part of me hangin
in the past. I love my Realists, my paired Nikormats, Pentaxes and
exotic hardware, but computers and digital devices offer to extend the
classics into new realms. This is serious fun. I encourage you to join
in.

I am currently producing a collection of my images in DepthCharge
format.
See what I have done at my home page... just a few samples.
