P3D Filtering the list
Message text written by INTERNET:photo-3d@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
>I didn't know that everyone was required to read every message, no matter
how off topic.<
I'm sorry, but it's a little sad when someone in a discussion has to lie
about what the other guy is saying in order to crucify him for saying it. I
would be very surprised if anyone at any time in this discussion ever said
or suggested anything so ridiculous. I'm sure no subscriber to this list
reads every message. However, many of us recognize that if you subscribe to
a group that discusses 3D imaging, a great many topics related to different
aspects of the subject are going to be discussed in a rather jumbled and
informal manner. To join the group and then start building mechanical
blockades to make certain that nothing ever reaches your eyes that happens
to have been uttered by so-and-so, or nothing that happens to contain some
arbitrary handful of magic words, is to render the usefulness of the list
virtually worthless. And then to further scramble around trying to develop
word lists to block out every little tangent discussion is even more
idiotic--by the time you have it all filtered out it will have been long
gone of its own accord, possibly along with that one vital message that
contained everything you ever wanted to know, but whose hapless author just
happened to use one incorrect word in telling it. In order to learn
anything, you must not allow some arbitrary outside censoring device to
slash away huge chunks of possibly relevant material and then allow you to
sift thorough the scraps that remain. You must use your own brain, your own
imagination, and decide for yourself what is important and what is not.
Besides, it probably takes a lot less time to glance at a message and click
that little "Delete" button than it does to fret and worry over just which
collection of "kill" words will make that half-second of actual thought
unnecessary.
