P3D Nishika & Nimslo

Gerald Belton asked about the Nishika Camera. I won't say which is the
best between a Nishika and a Nimslo as there are enough "experts" on P3D
who will tell him that. I do want to relate a experiment I made once to
compare these two "4 lens wonders"
Shortly after I bought a Nishika, with Flash and the Vincent Price Video
for $35, in 1991, there was a big "flap" in the SSA about the quality or
lack thereof in the plastic lens in the Nishika. I shot a roll of color
film with a Nimslo and another with a Nishika, sticking to the
limitations of the small lens spacing and lack of large depth of field.
I made "people pictures" or more correctly people/dog pictures, in the US
and in Scotland. I had them reproduced as lenticular prints. Then I
took what I considered was the best image from both cameras and , using
panalure paper, reproduced these negatives as Black & White Stereo
Cards. The reason for BW was two fold (1) BW is what I do.
(2) I wanted to be sure that both stereo cards were at their maximum
sharpness, which sometimes is missing when a color lab does the work.
I put the two lenticulars and the two BW stereo cards in a SSA print
folio and asked all the members of that folio to tell me which
lenticular and card came from the Nimslo and the same on the Nishika.
Out of 22 members of that folio only two made the correct choice on the
Nimslo. This indicates to me there is not a great deal of difference in
the quality of the lenses of the two cameras.
