It's hard to say how significant this really is.  I'll bet the Directors of
Photography had stereo vision, probably the editors too.  On a lot of
movies, the Director concentrates on the actors, and the DP blocks the
shots.  I suspect these directors relied on their camera crew to set up the
stereo aspects.
