Jeremy Illingworth asks about experiences with twinning SLRs. I've used
twinned SLRs almost exclusively, but after a brief flirtation with a pair of
non-electronics (Canon F-1n), I found I just couldn't get sych close enough
for strobe with the use of a twin shutter release. So I bought a couple of
relatively inexpensive Canon EOS Rebel X bodies, 35-80 zoom lenses, and two
electrical remote sutter releases. I spliced the two releases into a single
button, hooked up the two cameras to a wooden bracket bottom to bottom, rigged
up some toothed roller bearing wheels and matching undustrial belting so that
the two cameras zoom simultaneously, and voila! --excellent synch. Because
the cameras are positioned vertically, all my shots are side-by-side
verticals, perfect for a Holmes-type viewer. Generally, though, I don't limit
myself to the 3.5-inch high format. Rather, I try to compose carefully and
make full use of as near to full-frame 35 mm as I can. The result is that
most of my shots wind up being a full 5 inches high. I find I have no touble
seeing them through a Holmes-type viewer (or free viewing them). Haven't yet
tried View Magic format. Hope this helps. Jim Norman
