The idea seems to have been what you have already tried; either to use a
mount like the Reel 3D slip ins, or to put a spacer between a 2x2 pair.
Besides the cardboard spacer you've figured out, for a while somebody was
selling aluminum clips for this purpose.  I have a metal steal-the-light
viewer made for this format, but I can't remember the brand right now.
Radex? It came with an aluminum frame that holds two slides.
