I did these sorts of things when I reached my teens, probably because my mother
was into Stereo Photography via a Realist (which I still have). I recall getting frustrated
having to shuffle the slides thru a viewer (very labor intensive) so I eventually got to where
I could freeview them by holding them up to a white wall or appropriately illuminated
background... 

Interestingly enough I could freeview from the age of 10 (perhaps) but only got the knack
of cross-eyed viewing a couple of years ago after someone suggested using the "paper
cut out" method of developing the ability.
