I NEVER violate the window CAUSE I have smashed it! ;-)
That is, I have thrown a brick at it long ago! :-)
As it has been mentioned, sticking things through the
window (without touching it) is not a violation.
Touching the window is ONLY a violation IF the object
touches AND IS sticking out beyond the window. Even
in these cases it isn't intolerable on the top and
bottom sides of the window, as it has been pointed out.
As has been mentioned this is because the mind has a
hard time reconciling the conflicting depth cues. There
is a way to stick things beyond the window and touch it
too! Let's take the case of looking at a 3-D projection
and it has something sticking out on the bottom frame.
While looking at the screen, place a piece of paper,
hand or other object in front of you, parallel to the
bottom frame. It doesn't have to overlap the bottom
frame but just be form a "new" partial bottom frame
in front of you. You don't want to crop the image.
By doing this you'll notice that the sensation of the
object sticking out will be much more pronounced! This
is because the conflicting cues are resolved. Mike K.
mentioned the dark pants protruding the edge of the
window in a dark room, which is a similiar example.
I might add that sometimes you have to choose the
lesser of two evils. Often times I disregard window
violations to reduce any ghosting (especially in
anaglyphs). If the the image is going to be hung on
the wall, the simple remedy is to make another frame
sticking a few inches beyond the image, similiar to
as was described above.
