Most likely cause of shutter failure is the gold plated wire contact at bottom
left of shutter plate, as seen when you have the front cover off.

You say the "electronics do work", and by this I am guessing that you mean
that the LEDs show in the viewfinder "although only sometimes" seems to point
at the contact that I've indicated.

Another thing to investigate is the solenoid - it MUST be clean where the iron
plate that it holds to keep the shutter open contacts it. any dust or dirt
here will allow the shutter to close before it has opened...

Everything on the "Made in UK" cameras worked, but were very close to
tolerance. The Japanese cameras were more robust...
