P3D Using two SLR's for stereo photography

Dear fotoschack@xxxxxxxxx,
I was wondering what kind of twin SLR system you use to take 3D
photos? Furthermore, how do you orientate the two camera bodies? I
think there are three (3)possible orientations:
1. Side by side, so both camera bases are resting on a common
horizontal surface. Gives horizontal pics with a hyperstereo base.
2. Base to Base, so that both of the camera's bases are touching one
another. Gives Verticle pics close to normal stereo separation of 65mm.
3. Top to top, so that both of the camera's hotshoe's are touching
one another. Gives Verticle pics that have a slightly hyperstereo base.
This last method (3) has the advantage of being able to see your
subject with both eyes and thus three dimensionally since both of the
camera's viewfinders are in the correct position for both of your eyes
to look through them.
Lastly, can you still take 3D pictures, if any one of the above
combinations are rotated 90 degrees.
For example two side by side cameras would normally take horizontal
pictures, could you rotate the camera's 90 degrees to obtain verticle
3D pictures?
I think this wouldn't work since the cameras would be taking pictures
that would be one above the other while you would be viewing the
pictures side by side.
Forgive me if these are basic questions, but I'm just starting 3D
photography. Also please correct me if any of the above information is
incorrect.
Peace Rolland
