P3D Filters for Realist

The prices of 90mm effect filters are ridiculous!
I went through my 2-D collection of filters to find a few doubles (
different sizes though) or purchased a small matching filter ( 49mm) to
use for stereo. Using the tripod mount thread, a piece of flex tubing,
and a large clip removed from a clipboard.....I was able to place a pair
of filters in front of the lenses of the Realist. Using polarizers and
star filters, I look through them to dial in the approx effect and then
position them in the clip. Very primative indeed but it works!
I also have my assistant Karen stoop down and hand-hold the filters when
I'm in a hurry. I don't need to see the effect through the viewfinder (
unless it is a graduated effect which I will report on later)
A word of caution however.....make sure sun and other light does not
reflect against the back of the filter.....this will cause reflections
and flairs that ruin the image. It would be helpful to rig some type of
lense hood or stand in the shade to eliminate this possibility. ( this
can still occur with the filter pressed against the lense as the glass
filter diameter is larger than the lense diameter) Although the Realist
flip-lense cover does seem to help reduce light. Someday, I may try a
Realist shot without filters....I understand the camera takes a pretty
good shot that way also. :-) Mark Dottle
