Actually, it is called circular polarization because the ray of light is
passed through the linear polarizer and becomes
polarized. when the polarized light passes through the retarder, it is
given a spin and moves/travels in a helical pattern
When the light is reflected from a specular surface, rotation reverses and
is stopped when passing back through the retarder.
