>Having seen the web site I would agree with the first statement. However
as
the "impressed witness" I would like to point out that the effects
definitely went beyond just floating a 2D movie in a particular plane in
space. Individual objects in the scenes had depth beyond the illusion
created by normal 2D film.<

One explanation occurs to me. They are using laserdisk or DVD recordings,
not film, as indicated in their website. If they are using a true 3D stereo
video projector, they are perhaps separating the two fields and polarizing
one for each eye, as is done in *true* 3D video projection. One common
method of converting 24-frame-per-second film to 30-frame-per-second video
is to intersperse frames every four or five frames that are in fact an
interlacing of two consecutive frames. On these occasions, the two eyes
would actually be sent two different frames instead of two copies of the
same one. When the camera was moving laterally in the right direction at
the right speed, there might well be an illusion of depth, in exactly the
same way as a Pulfrich effect. There's a lot of supposition, if and maybe
in there, but it might provide an explanation that fits the description.
After all, we know the studio is certainly not supplying them with anything
unique, and the implied explanation on their website is total hogwash.
