Actually, I find that many older types of projector bulbs are
neither scarce nor expensive. Magazines such as shutterbug often have
ads for mail-order shops offering common bulb types in the $10-$15
range, and I believe most of these have the types used in most of the
projectors of the 50s and 60s (CAL, CLS, CZA, CZX, DAK, DAT, DDB).
Sometimes real bargains can be found when a school or school
district has a "garage sale" of its own goods. I went to one last
winter, walked out with two filmstrip projectors ($3 each) and 14 bulbs
at 25 cents each (this included two DDBs).
Also, keep in mind that these 120v, vertical base bulbs are full of
substitution opportunties. A DAT can stand in for a DAK (albeit
slightly less bright), whereas the CAL can sub for a CZA (and possibly a
DAT or a DAK as well, same electrical basing, but the CAL has a small
reflector behind the filament).
