Just like a live auction where one doesn't know if the winner was
at his maximum or if he had a long way to go before dropping out.

All who are available to attend a live auction's end can bid, and all who
are available at the end of an ebay auction can bid. What's the
difference? If anything the ebay auction even allows people who
are NOT attending to bid as well! Ebay auctions seem more fair
and "level" than live ones.
