Many "real" auctions also have proxy bids on valuable items, and those are
treated in the same manner as eBay "maximum" bids (you dont know what they are
unless they are surpassed).
Regarding "sniping" - i have been lucky enough at times to be the sniper...and
unlucky at times to have been the snipee. And actually, as much as i hate to
lose out on an item, I get alot of enjoyment out of the eBay auction process
itself, win or lose. An auction's end can be disappointing or exhilarating,
but is always exciting. Also, if i won on every auction i bid on, i'd be
broke!
As to those comparing eBay to other types of auctions, i say "why bother?" An
eBay auction, like all other online/cyberexperiences is something unique to
the medium. And if you feel you need to compare them, then i need to remind
you of the enormous advantages which eBay has offered all of us - the fact
that the 3D/stereo items we covet and used to search many years for...and
often never even found....show up with great regularity, without us having to
travel to auctions, thrift shops, camera shows, and rummage sales, etc.
I'm sure most will agree that because of eBay, we have seen and purchased
items which we had longed to acquire, and in many cases found items which we
didnt even know existed - often rekindling or magnifying our interest in
stereo.
Long live eBay - and NO, i don't own any stock in it!
Best regards,
Gary
