As someone "in the middle" between the South Bay and Oakland, I can say
that it would be much easier for us to attend a South Bay meeting than
an Oakland meeting. I think a lot of us who live in the "Southeast
Bay", work in the South Bay. Both Susan and I do. In order to avoid
the deadly commute hours (between approximately 7 and 10AM and 4 and
7PM), I work a time-shifted day, which is aided by the fact that I am a
consultant. The combination means that putting in a full 8 hour day at
a client site, and getting from the client site in the South Bay to
Oakland in the "Northeast Bay" in time for a 7 PM meeting is all but
impossible. Commuting anywhere from the South Bay before at least 7 PM
is a nightmare. To get to Oakland from the San Jose area by 7 would
mean leaving by 5:45 at the latest.
On the other hand, getting to a South Bay meeting by 7 PM would be a
piece of cake, since I would basically only have to travel a couple of
miles, and could take local roads rather than congested freeways
("highways" to you non-Californians :-) ). There would be practically
no additional distance involved, since the meeting would likely be
between work and home, whereas Oakland is considerably farther north
than home, involving extra distance both ways. I know there are other
NSA members in our city, perhaps they are in a similar situation.
I'd certainly be willing to give a South Bay club a go. Maybe we could
have our meetings at the new Tech Museum!
