P3D Titles

Dr, T raises the question, Should a title be included during slide
competitions? I think every image should have a title. The purpose of a
title can range from cataloging and referencing, or adding a thought or
additional insight and information for the observer. However, I DO NOT
think a title should be considered for competitive scoring purposes for
these reasons:
Suppose I take a great close-up photo of a child
pointing over my head towards the sky above. I may wish to title the
photo " On the roof, In the tree, It's a bird, It's a plane, It's Super
balloon, it's a Squirrel, It's a plane crash......etc. etc..
Or...conversely, I can take a photo of the bird and title the photo "
Something a child pointed out" Frankly....it does not matter! A title
CAN offer additional info to the observer without the title subject
being included in the photograph.
Especially when it is impossible to include both elements in the photo.
If a shot is well done, why should the title conform to the desires of
an observer or judge? If this is an issue. then void titles completely
during competitions! I'm sure music critics told The Who to name that
song " Teenage Wasteland" instead of ( what's it called?) Baba O'Rielly?
Would it make a difference....Of course not! Dr. T's impressive shot
entitled "Hayride" makes no reference to a hayride at all.......the ride
is suggested or implied.....I do not see a tractor, road or path,
trailer, horses, motion cues etc.. I would suggest " Straw Hats" as a
title. Am I wrong to suggest this?.....of course I am! :-) Was George's
shot a good shot? Of course it is! :-)
