Units don't matter much, the marking on the measuring stick remains in
the same place, only thing that changes is the number next to it.
In the equation, one item was divided by another with the same
units. This "cancels" those units when you do a units-check on
it. This leaves one other item (with units) across the equals from
another, so they have to have the same units seeing as how the first
two cancelled their units out.
So mixing English and metric really doesn't matter. In the
U.S. where camera fl's are done in metric and distance is often
done in feet (English units), having mixed-units isn't unusual.
Of course, if I recall properly from when I was in grade school,
the U.S. was theoretically to be 100% metric long before now.
