I think they serve a useful purpose. I also think a little humor is fine.
It would sometimes be nice if such posts had slightly more focus on things
that would be of particular interest to non-members. I would prefer that
the amount of text dedicated to congratulating contest winners be kept to
a minimum, though a description of the winning photos could be completely
appropriate.

I will now disregard my own advice, and make a comment of no interest to
anyone except PSSP members: the chairs are much more comfortable this year!
