David - we moved about 1.5 years ago - things are now at
http://www.calcite.rocky.edu/photo-3d

I'm interested in comments on the PhotoSmart scanner. Apparently there is a
rebate offer right now which brings the price in at about $300. I roamed around
the net a bit during last weekend, and found a couple of reviews which are
pretty favorable. One in particular seemed well done (had side by side comparisons
with the $1500 Nikon Coolscan). Their conclusion was that although the performance
was not the same with the HP, it was pretty close, and at only 1/5 the price.

BUT the big question of course is what you are asking - how about the usablility
for scanning traditional realist pairs - would you have to unmount them? Could
you scan both sides at once, or have to do one at a time and post process them
via Photoshop or something similar. And what is the TRUE resolution on slides
(as opposed to the 2100 dpi or so claimed resolution - is that interpolated or
actual?).

lastly, does anyone know of a major computer or warehouse chain that is carrying
them so you can buy one 'off the shelf' (the better for looking at one prior to
purchase).

The reason I started pursuing this is that the HP is mentioned favorably over the
the photo-genealogy mailing list (along with the ever present debate about the
longevity of photographic images in computer vs traditional media).

THANKS
