P3D Re: HP Scanner "Thingy"

I have recently purchased two of these slide scanner "thingys", one for
the office and one for home (whenever I get a scanner there!). First,
the price has gone up from the previously reported $5.00 to $7.00.
Also, they charge tax but no shipping so my total cost was a bit over
$15.00 for the two. They arrived within two days of my placing the
order.

The directions say to place the slide adapter on the scanner with the
"arrow in the upper left corner. In my experimenting with scanners here
at work, I found I had to turn the unit 180 degrees in order for the
light to reflect properly. My suggestion is to try the slide adapter in
various alignments and see what comes out best. The unit is not a piece
of rocket science. It's simply a triangular unit with a reflective
metal piece inside which redirects the scanner light up, over and back
through the slide.

I tried two scanners. The first one worked beautifully and, with Corel,
enhanced the 1950's slide of my grandmother and aunt wonderfully. I
don't recall the results of the second scanner, probably because I was
really rushed to try it out. Still, I think it came out pretty good.

In all, for around $8.00, it does a decent job.

Personally, I've been debating on the purchase of a Scanport SQ3036T 36
bit flatbed scanner with 35mm film scanner. It's available from Surplus
Auction at $159.00 (as of today anyway). Unfortunately, my wife needs
maternity clothes more than I need a scanner and I really need a faster
machine and a bigger disk drive more than a scanner.

But, if you want to see the information on this one, go to

	http://www.surplusdirect.com

which will actually put you at the Egghead website (it's all the same
now). Choose "Digital Imageing/Scanners" from the Egghead Surplusdirect
menu option on the left. Then select "Flatbed Scanners". This
particular scanner will be listed near the end of the list. I'd love to
hear if anyone has purchased this unit and what they think of it.

Regards,
Ron
