There is a product called "PEC-12", described as an "archival
photographic emulsion cleaner", made by Photographic Solutions (very
punny) Inc. of Buzzards Bay MA. As described on the bottle:

"PEC-12 cleans film or print surfaces of non water-soluble stains,
including ball-point ink, most permanent ink, finger oil, laser
separation oil, grease pencil, adhesive residue, smoke and soot, fungal
growth, color developer, tar, etc. Evaporates almost instantly without
affecting the emulsion."

"Intended for use with contemporary, hardened silver-based films (slides
and negatives) and papers (color, B&W, fibre, RC). Not intended to be
used on albumen or non-hardened gelatin emulsions."

>From the odor, and the cautions on the bottle, I gather it is methyl
alcohol-based. It will not work on water-based stains.

I have found it at serious camera stores. I think it's available from
Light Impressions, as well.
