When I use cardboard mounts I also mount to the smaller opening.
However, I also mount them so that they should be viewed from
the side with the smaller opening. I probably developed this
habit because my first experience with stereo slides was with
Kodalux-mounted images, and that's how they do it. Now I admit
that there is precious little about Kodalux mounting that any
of us should *want* to emulate. ;-) The smaller opening as
front, however, seems to make sense to me. When viewed with the
the larger-opening side forward, I find the dark border around
the image annoying. I also find that with a bright light source
you can see some of the cropped part of the image right through
the single layer of cardboard, when viewing from the side with
the larger opening (at least with the tape-shut mounts).

The tape-shut cardboard mounts (aka "Spicer mounts") (and Joel
Alpers' MF cardboard mounts) have rounded corners for the smaller
opening, and square corners for the larger openings. I can't
definitely recall whether the heat seal mounts have rounded
corners in the openings of the smaller side. I consider the
rounded corners another indication of the "front" side...but
I could be mistaken.

I think Piper's pages may discuss the front/back question, but I
don't have them with me. (I should buy a second copy to keep at
the office!)

What do others cardboard mount users consider the front side
of the mounts?

Thanks,
Paul Talbot
