>Rather than risk a double exposure, I wind another frame and cock the shutter.
>Any suggestions?

Yes. Stick to this routine: Advance to the next frame immediately after you
take the picture (it is very unlikely that you will want to double expose,
so why wait?) Cock the shutter just before taking the next picture.

I have been following this routine for years now... The only times that
I had a problem is when I gave my camera to someone else... Since they
are not following my routine, the film was not advanced to the next frame.

But the fact that you are asking indicates that 1) you don't have a later
model Realist with the double-exposure-prevention feature (which is fine
- but this feature will not allow you to double expose by accident)
but also 2) the red flag does not work? The red flag is supposed to warn
you that you have not advanced the film. Every time you fire the shutter
the red flag comes on. It disappears when you advance. So, if in doubt,
just check to see if the flag is there. If it is, advance. If not, you
have advanced. Helps, but still no substitute for developing a routine to
stick to.

>Also if the film advanced is broken in some way is it possible that it's
>skipping entire pairs of frames?

Nothing common... Clearly, you advanced a few extra times.
