P3D Phantograms

I believe I've finally figured out that a Phantogram is a stereo image that
is viewed from a 45 degree angle (like you'd view your dinner plate at the
table). It protrudes 'through the window' and appears above the paper it
is printed on. If it is a drawing, the laws of perspective must be applied
because of the angle of view. It would be a real technical feat to apply
this to photography, as Boris has done.
I am still unclear as to why this is more useful than a stereo image that
is viewed with the paper perpendicular to the line of sight. If you are
making an engineering drawing, then a perspective view from an angle can be
useful. But why would it be useful in a photo? Why not just 'float the
image through the window'?
