No. But a twelve stop range means more room to mess up and still get a
serviceable negative... that's why the photojournalists shoot it and
that's why it makes sense for most shooters.

You're right, there are some newspapers which do direct digital. The
Globe experiments with it from time to time, but keeps shying away from
it. They usually use the top-end kodaks, which at this point are $30k
cameras, and yes, for 85 line screen newspapers (not to mention the
poorly registered color), some newspapers say they're ok for the smaller
print sizes they use.
