?? why sacrifice a roll of film... just cock the shutter and fire.. is the red flag
visible.. (no its broke).. yes..then advance the film (by moving the cog on the 
the pressure plate) and the check that it disappears. No film lost !

I tend to use Velvia or Sensia..  although I have used Provia as well.

Argos sell Sensia II for around 8 pounds including processing...
(I tend to use this when I have enough Argos points from filling up
the car with BP Petrol :))

MX2 (mail order) sell Velvia for about 3.60 for a 36 exposure.
Provia was about the same if I remember right....
