I suppose one explanation might be that each light fills in the shadow
regions of the other. These would still be darker than the surroundings lit
by both lights so could still be regarded as shadows after all a black
shadow only apears so by contrast with white light . In the same way an
interesting variation of this demonstration is to illuminate with one light
only coloured the other left white. Both shadows of the colour used and its
complimentary can still be seen. I dont know whether this would give a
stereo image with anaglyph glasses as both eyes will receive the image in
white light the complimentary colour being produced in the eye/brain .
