Hi friends, As a follow-up to Jon Golden's VAT remarks. Let me say that
he is absolutley right. In Britain we are in the 'fortunate' position
of belonging to the EU (European Union) but if we buy - as a private
citizen - within the EU we are still subject to VAT (value added
tax). However if, like The Widescreen Centre, we are registered for
VAT then we can receive the goods free of tax. There are no other
taxes applied between EU countries.

Tony...thanks for adding that. Although that is different than the
US...where neither vendor nor consumer would have that VAT applied,
unless they went to Gemany and bought at the shop. Its hard to
understand many of the costs that apply to importing until one learns
the systems of safely and legally importing....sometimes that is by
trial and error as it is a large bureaucracy.

I could have tried to evade the duties and entry fees that are due by
customs policies, coming and going from both Germany and the US. But
eventually, and sooner than it would have been than later (I have items
held up in customs several times a year...even with an agent doing much
of the work for me)....customs agents would come a knocking, or hold a
shiopment for questioning...and would posssibly want to know about
previous shipments....an audit possibly?? That is not worth the
trouble of trying to beat...plus its against the law.

For one consumer to try to jump these hurdles....well thats their
choice, but I wont go on with the list of causalties that I have heard
about.

Happy Holidddays to you, Bob Aldrige, Dave Burder..and all over there in
the land of great tea, and scones with clodded cream (yum!)
Jon Golden
