I've been on the same quest for some time without much luck.  The
knowledgable
amateurs say it can't be done - (cardboard cutout syndrome).  But there
is a
commercial company here in Liverpool who will turn any 2d photo into 3d
(anaglyph) for 49 pounds sterling.  I went along there and the results
are
amazingly good.  If you know Tom Johnstone's book Magic 3d, you will
have
seen an example of their work (The Marilyn Monroe shot).  However they
won't
divulge their secrets, and I was only able to observe that they were
using
Adobe Photshop 5 at the time.
