Anytime you want to maximize the use of the film (i.e. minimize the
cropping ordinarily associated with proper setting of the stereo window),
toeing in will help. That's because toe-in effectively places the stereo
window at the intersection of the cameras' optical axes. If you shoot
vertical format full frame 35mm, toe-in is very desirable, especially for
the close-up work I am so fond of.
With some compositions keystone distortion becomes a problem. You either
avoid those compositions, or put up with the distortion. If my budget was
unlimited, I would shoot my vertical format full frames with a twin SLR
using shift/tilt lenses. If only I could shift my lenses inwards, I would
not have to toe in.
This is not an option with the two XAs.

Although I have no experience with this camera, I expect you would have
problems. Shoot in a manual mode if possible, to ensure that both cameras
are actually using identical settings.
