It is my understanding that each frame is 'double shuttered', resulting in
an effective oscillation of 96 HZ, thus reducing the visable flicker.
I had the opportunity to tour the projection booth in the New York City
Imax theater, as a guest of Paul Panabaker of IMAX. There are two 8 to 10
foot diameter platters holding the left and right eyes' content, which is
shot in 6 x 7 cm horizontal frames. Each reel presents 24 new images per
second, alternated and double shuttered to acheive 96 Hz.
I was lucky enough to be given a single IMAX frame which had been cut from
a broken film copy. I keep in in the case with my Realist Red Button
viewer. It makes a very nice souvenir, and helps to explain the difference
between the resolution (and costs) of my Realist format slides and IMAX!
Sincerely,
