If the closest object was really 50 yards away you would need a 
separation of at least 3 feet - and that would only give you moderate 
3D!!  (50 to 1 can still be a bit on the flat side)

Nancy (my wife) has a twin XA rig and she carries a piece of 2 inch x 2 
inch x º inch aluminium angle iron in the car for hypers.  This bar is 
about 1 metre long and has a series of holes drilled in it.  If the 
closest object was greater than 50 yards away she would normally use two 
tripods.  We have extension wiring so the cameras stay in perfect sync.  
Personally I use a couple of SLRs in a similar configuration, however I 
must say the XAs give excellent results and are much easier to lug 
around.

I think, Mark, that we are talking about degrees of "FLAT".  Both 
pictures would be FLAT with the separations that you are talking about - 
if the closest object was 50 yards away!!  

Are you sure there wasnít some road or paving in the foreground that 
gave you the depth that you saw.
