We've been snowed in, iced in and now the river is coming up, but the
news still gets through. Our Rabbit Hash 3D Photo Club members are mostly
in warmer climes, leaving us to shiver alone in the dark of winter and
now the Moet et Chandon is agettin" low. And Keeneland has purchased our
local racetrack. So maybe I'm a little irritable.
The Keeneland reference brings me to the point of today's sermon. We
have a long history here of beating dead horses and the deceased Dobbin
of what to call 3D photography is flayed severely.
Among ourselves we can agree on calling it what ever we like, Double See,
Real Pitcher, Pictures that Rely on an optical Illusion to Give the
Impression of Depth (PIROAOITGTIOD), Cromulet Photos, or even Stereo
Sight, to the rest of the world they are going to be 3D (or 3-D)
Pictures. And antique dealers will refer to those things you look at old
stereo views with as stereopticon. That's the way it is, language does
what it wants, it is never entirely precise. Some of my math oriented
friends think that's a problem, but it is our amazing capacity for
understanding each other using such a flawed tool that gives language
it's superiority over the mere mechanics of math.
So can we bury this horse and move on the next victim?
Charlie H.
