All of this is just my opinion. The Alps 1300 and 4000 printers are lower
quality printers. The new MD 5000 sounds great at 2400 dpi, but does not
include the dye sublimation option. That is $99 extra and they don't have any
in stock at the Alps web site and don't know when they will get any and when
they do, it is only 600x600. They don't support SCSII or Postscript for the
PC on the MD5000, although it looks like they do. It costs 50% more than a
MD1300, so I took it back. The MD1300 includes everything for dye sub and even
some free paper, which along with ink cartridges will soon dwarf the cost of
the printer. The prints are great (600x600 dye sublimation).
It works well for 3D from your digital camera. Shoot, transfer and print in 5
minutes, which is mostly print time. I will demo it at the next Atlanta
Stereographic Association meeting on Feb. 12. It will be with a cheap, old
technology Philips ESP60 camera on 4x6 paper, but the concept will be there.
[I don't know where this originally posted - the lists cover pretty much the
same stuff!]
