Actually, in the "SQ system" the rear two channels were retrieved by some
clever phase recovery, giving some additional information not present in the
front channels. There was a discreet 8-track four channel system that was also
on the market for a short time.  I believe RCA had a discreet four channel
system using a specially recorded LP and cartridge combination.  That system
was also short lived.
