The OSPS slide competition category entitled
" buildings & monuments" was held tues. eve. President Jim Motley opened
the ceremonies with the usual " warm and fuzzies". Dr T presented a
slide-bar workshop with overhead projector hand drawn illustrations of a
camera and tripod etc. The illustrations appeared " pseudo
flat".....that is, they appeared to be drawn left handed.....Dr. T is
right handed. T can freeview, but not freehand I'm sorry to report. T
served up a nice macro fare of slides including shots of bread, pasta,
eggs, and fruit warmed in the Bracket Dissolver. T is the Ron Popeil of
macros using a quasi-S1-Realist-
vegimatic approach. Donuts had to suffice during the break and in
keeping with olympic scandal tradition...." let the games begin" I
uttered.
My first shot entitled " holiday ranch" -a small, warm, and inviting
home with a christmas tree visible through an open front door....is
certainly not the same image the judges saw! Based on the title and
SCORE....one might visualize a moldy green ranch dip rotting in a
holiday serving tray since Christmas, and photographed just before the
competition! I thought the image was well done.......the judges thought
the image was well rotton! ( low score of the evening)
My second image entitled " northern avenue stars"- a night shot of a
victorian home with 2 lanterns in the foreground. Judges developed a
"sweet tooth" passing out accolades like penny candy. " Looks like a
Christmas card" etc etc.
But a large " cavity" developed as a result of all the sweet talk! The
score was not as sweet.
My last image entitled " civilization" was a traditional
hyper-cityscape shot framed by foreground foliage.....certainly my worst
of the evening......and a SECOND PLACE! The relevence of the title
seemed to perplex Dr T.
He asked " Mark, are you saying that Pittsburgh was the beginning of
civilzation?" I responded
" No.....are your Greek ruins the ruination of civilization?" Needless
to say....T withdrew the question.
Awards chairman Dennis Petti entered shots of religious monuments
however was not as blessed with the scoring. In a Michael Douglas
( Falling Down) and Al Pacino ( Justice For All)
style, Dennis scolded the judges! The outburst with regard to one of his
images " You might think I'm an $%^& but I think THis SLIde IS
EXCELLENT!! It should have scored MUCH HIGHER!!!" I happened to agree
with Dennis and earned his trust and confidence....and I was able to
talk him down from the ledge.
No one was injured.
The Pope was in St Louis...my brother lives there....he E-mails often. I
failed to see the signs or make the connection! Dt T ( 1st place) and
Karen ( 3rd place) won with images of churches! I took shots of
houses...go figure!
My psychic advisor was wrong again.....although Karen was quick to point
out a faint image of a church on the horizon in my " civilization" shot.
I'll accept that.
                                                Mark Dottle
