Wow! I am still alive! Alive and well, I might say!
Would you like to hear my long and frustrating story? Its only connection
with stereo is that everything that I do with this dumb computer of mine is
related to stereo photography.
So, here I go:
Fifteen years ago I was a "computer pioneer" with a 8088 Personal Computer
running DOS 2.0. My problem is that I stayed too long with it. My next
computer was a Pentium 120, 3 years ago. I did not go through 80286, 386,
486, Windows 2.0, Just straight from 8088 DOS to Pendium/Win95.
With DOS I knew exactly what was going on. Where every file was, what
purpose every file and program served. With Windows, I was lost from day
one and never bothered to figure things out. Some things did not work
well. I suspected that my computer was cursed but managed to get around
"glitches" even if I had to go through 3 different programs to get my modem
to work. I even managed to connect a few peripherals like scanners and
printers. Sure, things did not work well all the time, but they did work
(one way or another) most of the time.
Finally, last week the situation was like this: My hard drive was down to
50 MB free space, low-memory warnings were popping up, I had no sound (lost
that long time ago...), the system was crashing on a regular basis, and
when the "screen saver" came on, most often the computer would "freeze".
And I did not have a backup of ANYTHING!
So, enough procrastination. Time to take some action, I said to myself. I
removed the "screen saver" but in the process I changed my video card and
monitor settings and tried to reload my video card drivers. Then hell
broke lose! Fatal errors... in booting... I could only log in "safe mode".
AGGGHHHRRRR!!!
To be continued....
