P3D Back from the DDDead - Part II

We continue with DrT's computer problems...
After many frustrating hours I removed the fatal error and got back to
"normal" (typical annoying problems). At the same time I bought an
external Philips CD ReWritable unit for my wife. I thought this would
solve my backup problems too.
I installed it in her computer with absolutely no problems. Then I tried
to install it in mine. Fatal error during installation! Finally, I got
around that, but something was wrong and while things appeared to be
working fine, the CD unit would go nuts and ruin the CDs.
FINALLY, I decided to take deeper action (that's the 3D connection!) I
removed all peripherals from my computer. I cleaned the hard drive.
(That's when I discovered that a TEMP folder under WINDOWS was occupying
300 MB of memory of dangerous garbage! That's where my lost memory was...)
My hard disc had errors which were fixed and was 12% fragmented (the
computer guy at work says he has never heard of such a high percentage).
With a clean and defragmented disc, I reinstalled the CD ReWritable and
video drivers and took care of a couple "conflicts".
And, OH GOD OF COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY, my problems were solved!!! I now have
a working computer, no crashes no freezes, plenty of space in my hard
drive, a working CD that allowed me to back up my important files in only
two CDs (first backup in 3 years!!!)
My computer problems appear to be solved (fingers crossed). Only one thing
bugs me: The CD-R's that I am now creating cannot be read by my computer's
CD-ROM even though they can be read with by other Pentium of the same era
that I tried. I am going to buy a faster CD-ROM unit tonight that can read
both CD-R's and CD-RW's.
So, what is next???
